James E. West is an example of a succesful recall. He was taken out of office because he sexually abused boys before taking office. Then he started behaving homosexually towards other adults.
I did a research for a recent initiative for "A Year-End Update of Three Fearless Forecasts on Key California Political Issues" in California.
from what I read I feel that the religious belief that any immigrant is automatically harder working and more intelligent than a US citizen, or at least will work for lower pay. Politicians across the spectrum, Whitman, Fiorina, Brown and Newsom all believe this. As a result, unlike Oklahoma and Arizona for example, California provides billions in direct and indirect aid to illegal aliens despite our deficit.
The Serbian Government finally adopted The Constitution of the Republic of Serbia. It was adopted in October 28-29, 2006. 3,645,517 people voted on having a referendum, and 3,521,724 people voted on establishing a constitution.
Theresa Nesbitt U.S. History II Mr. Cannizzaro 11 November 2010 Initiative, Referendum, Recall: I will be discussing an example of referendum. Referendum is the practice of submitting to popular vote, or a measure proposed by a legislative body. My example includes that gay rights laws and laws classifying marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman were put to the direct democracy test. In 2006, Colorado gay rights advocates made an unsuccessful attempt to extend domestic partnership rights to the same gender couples through a referendum. During that same year, eight states had ballot issues to improve their constitutions to ban same-sex marriage relationships. All eight states except Arizona, was where the amendment was passed. In 2007, supporters of a planned referendum were not able to obtain the ballot referendum on two Oregon laws, which extended the Civil Rights protections & domestic partnership for gays and lesbians.
On May 30th 2008 , South Dakota citizens stalled the progress of one of a strict anti-abortion bill that was signed by governor Mike Rounds in March, and was supposed to take effect on July 1st. South Dakota had the popular referendum, which was a petition that allowed them to stop the abortion ban until voters make the final decision during the next election. The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families succeeded in filing a petition containing 38,416 signatures, which was twice the amount needed for the proposal to go directly onto the ballot.
Iceland held a referendum on March 6, 2010, to vote for whether or not to repay the Icesave debt to United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The people voted against repaying the debt.
In 2006, Neil Marko was recalled. He was the mayor of Roosevelt, New Jersey. The recall committee consisted of Roosevelt residents Delores Chasan, Virginia Edwards and Jill Joyce. They filed three petitions against him, the first two having failed, but the last was successful. The recall election was scheduled for February 7. He was recalled for believing to have allowed the establishment of the yeshiva at Congregation Anshei Roosevelt's Homestead Lane synagogue property. Apparently, the synagogue property was being used in violation of borough ordinance. According to the lawsuit, he claimed there is no provision for a private school in the district either as a principal or conditional use. But, the yeshiva was not the only reason for the recall. It was also alleged that Marko has changed stories, called his opponents names, failed to disclose information and put his personal interests before those of the borough. Also, recall was for his inability to work with the borough government and civic organizations, including the council, the Board of Education, the fire department and the Planning Board.
I did the Initiative of California Proposition 13 (1978). It was approved by california voters to lower property taxes for the people. It was done by a voting for the state.
I read the article concerning Arnold Schwarzenegger and his thoughts about the legalized recreational marijuana use in his state. He stated that he designed a bill in October that reduces the charge for possesion of marijuana.
In 1921 voters in North Dakota invoked recall proceedings against Governor Lynn Frazier. Not only were North Dakota voters successful at ousting Frazier they ousted his Attorney General and Secretary of agriculture as well. In 1983 for the first time in the state’s history voters in Michigan successfully recalled two of the states senators. Furthermore, in 1988 the people of Oregon successfully recalled one of their state legislators. In a more modern case California State Senator David Roberti was recalled in 1994 but won reelection by a wide margin of 59 percent of the total vote. -maria
I read an article called "Oklahoma Initiative Reform". It was about a woman "Norma Sapp" who's is a policy activist. She is a very strong woman who would not give up and a very good example for Initiative reform
Opposed by a federal judge, Oklahoma residents referendum was the nan on Shariah Law. This law is found in Koran and is the basis of law in most Islamic countries. The Shariah Law that is used in most Islamic countries to approve harsh punishment such amputations and stoning.Over 70% of state resisdent supported this law,but do the change in attorney general they also opposed this. Sykes said. “I am afraid that this might get written in stone that shouldn’t be because the attorney general is leaving and a new one is coming in.”
Referendum C on Denver, also called "The return of Tabor", whic has brought budget, saving higher education and health care system and the state. Kimberly Valdivia
Referendum is a direct vote in which an entire group of citizens, who are eligible to vote, are asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal. An example of a referendum is Preposition 19 in California, this year. Preposition 19 was a bill to legalize marijuana (not just medical marijuana). In a recent Los Angeles poll, 49% of voters said they oppose the measure. While 40% of voters said they would vote for it. In my opinion, I think Preposition 19 should not be passed. Even though some think it will boost the economy, it will destroy the citizens within it. It will cause social and mental issues within months of the approval of the bill.
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the U.S. This bill would authorize the Puerto Rican government to conduct a referendum asking voters if they wish to keep or change their current political status. If a majority of voters want a change, a second referendum would be held to ask if they prefer statehood, independence, or sovereignty. The legislation doesn’t favor any particular status option. It is not, as some have mischaracterized it, a statehood bill.
James E. West example of recall: James E. West was the mayor of Spokane, Washington in 2005. He was the target of allegations of the sexual abuse of boys twenty years earlier. These allegations became public after West became a target of a sting operation conducted by his hometown newspaper, the Spokesman Review. He admitted to engaging in homosexual behavior with adults in recent years, despite an earlier record of supporting "anti-gay" legislation. Though never charged, he was removed from office by recall in 2005. The Federal Bureau of Investigation eventually closed its investigation and took no action for lack of evidence.
An example of Referendum would be the second Amendment of Georgia. It tells how the people of Georgia voted to get charged ten extra dollars when they renew their tag of their car. Smaller cars often causes the most accident so they voted for the ten extra dollars. That extra cash would go to the trauma system. The trauma system includes the Grady Hospital and the highways.
Example of Referendum: A referendum is the principle or practice of submitting to popular vote a measure passed on or proposed by a legislative body or by popular initiative. Recently in Califonia there has been alot of controversey on whether to legalize marijuana. The referndum was held in November 2. 54% of the California voters voted against the legalization of marijuana. Therefore, it was not legalized.
Referendum is the submission of a proposed public measure or actual statute to a direct popular vote. During 2010, in the state of California, a proposition was held for the legalization of marijuana. It was voted against, but only by six percent of the voters and this stunned many Americans because the vote was so close. This vote is an example of referendum.
Brian Huapaya U.S. History 2 Honors November 10, 2010 Period- 2 Initiative, Referendum, and Recall The Recall of Gray Davis In 2003 the California gubernatorial recall election occurred which was a special election permitted under California state law. The result of this recall resulted in voters replacing Democrat Governor Gray Davis with Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. The recall election occurred on October 7 2003 and the results were certified on November 14 2003 making Davis the first governor recalled in the history of California and the second in U.S. History. The recall process became available to the people in California in 1911 by the Progressive Era reforms that spread across the United States
The people of Venezuela recently rejected constitutional referendum that would allow him to be re-elected and have more power over Venezuela. The vote was 51% to 49%. The US applauded this decision from the Venezuelan people and are glad that the Venezuelans want to live in freedom and democracy.
A referendum is a submission of a proposed public measure or actual statute to a direct popular vote. In August of this year Kenya held a referendum which was seen as a political peace deal. If the document would be approved by the people it would limit the presidential powers, would create a senate, recognize Muslim courts and would settle land disputes within the people. This vote was seen as a peace offering after 1000 people died in the 2007 election. About 66% of the people voted for the new constitution. The president supported the new constitution but others that were against it said that,it may get worse. Carla Carigga
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez has filed a lawsuit to stop Norman Braman's recall efforts on a technicality. Braman, a billionaire activist who is spearheading and funding the effort to recall Alvarez, collected and delivered 112,849 petition signatures to the county clerk's office for verification Friday. Alvarez filed a lawsuit Friday to declare the recall petition invalid on the grounds that the petition's approval signature was provided by D. Collins, the deputy clerk, not Clerk of Courts Harvey Ruvin. The lawsuit said the petition to recall the mayor "is improper as to form because the petition was not approved by the 'Clerk of the Court' as mandated by the Miami-Dade County Home Rule Charter." Earlier in the day, Braman personally escorted the truck loaded with 113 boxes petitions to the county clerk's office.
I will comment an example of referendum. On ballots in 2006's midterm election, Florida voters approved an initiative that requires the state to use tabacco settlement money on a public relations campaign to prevent teen tabacco use. Several states also considered raising cigarette taxes and allocating that money to tabacco prevention and education. These proposals passed in Arizona and South Dakota, but failed in California and Missouri.
The Toyota recall situation is very serious. When safety is involved, it is crucial that consumers get their information from authoritative sources. In the current situation, NHTSA is one of those high-value sources.
It's worth noting that it was US safety officials who pushed a reluctant Toyota to finally recall and stop selling millions of vehicles with a potential accelerator problem.
A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal which may result in the adoption of a new constitution, a constitutional amendment, a law, the recall of an elected official or simply a specific government policy. An example of a referendum of this year would be California’s Proposition 19 on the legalization of marijuana. In a recent poll, the voters seem to have voted against Proposition 19 and San Francisco was the only exception where voters supported the Proposition 19. The poll also found that the support for the Proposition 19 was a generational issue as majority of thirty plus voters were absolutely against it while the voters under thirty voted in its favor. ~Zack Locorriere
Juan Nieves West Virginia: It has been five years since West Virginans had a statewide referendum. In 2005, the Mountaineer State voted on a referendum involving the state employees retirement systems.
The question called for voters to approve the issuance of bonds totaling $5.5 billion dollars to help the state fund its retirement systems. Also, the question disclosed that the high amount of bonding being asked for would help deal with unfunded liabilities to the pension system. Voters in West Virginia defeated the amendment by a margin of 53.9% to to 46.1%.
In 2010, the West Virginia Legislature considered two constitutional amendments for creating the definition of marriage and allowing counties to give tax breaks to new businesses. The marriage amendment did not receive a vote in either house of the legislature. The business tax break amendment got the support of the West Virginia House of Delegates on February 17, 2010 but failed on a Senate vote.
